With the rise of sustainability in the automotive industry, Volvo has revealed the all-new EX90, an all-electric SUV that sets an impressive benchmark in environmentally conscious design. The company has eschewed traditional luxury in favour of embracing circularity and sustainable materials, distinguishing the Volvo EX90 as a progressive step forward.
An immediate standout is the innovative Nordico upholstery, manufactured from recycled textiles, including PET bottles and bio-attributed polymer sourced from Swedish and Finnish forests. The tactile attention to detail in the fabric's texture speaks to the company's dedication to crafting quality interiors. According to Lisa Reeves, the Nordico material offers a uniquely sculpted feel, reminiscent of miniature landscapes.
Another striking feature is the vehicle's customization capabilities. The Volvo EX90 invites owners to personalize the car’s interior with a selection from seven different “rooms”. Influenced by the Scandinavian lifestyle and its intimate bond with nature, each room establishes a distinct mood through a thoughtful amalgamation of colour, upholstery, and material finish. In an inspired touch, the SunLike LEDs illuminate the cabin, enabling a near-sunlight colour expression that highlights the striking wood deco and sustainable materials.
Further underlining its sustainable credentials, the Volvo EX90 also offers Nativa-certified wool blend seat finishing. This fabric, certified for sustainability and stringent animal welfare, environmental, and social standards, has also earned the Performance Certification from the Woolmark Company.
The commitment to sustainability extends to the physical structure of the Volvo EX90. The vehicle's build incorporates FSC-certified wood panels and carpets derived partly from regenerated polyamide. The thoughtful assembly means the EX90 contains nearly 50 kilograms of recycled plastics and bio-based materials - the most significant amount in Volvo's line-up.
Through its unique blend of innovative materials and a fresh interpretation of luxury, the all-electric Volvo EX90 marks a significant stride in sustainable vehicle design. The car stands as a testament to the potential of responsible material sourcing and mindful design in the automotive industry.
