The new Volvo XC90 continues the long-lived Volvo tradition of offering some of the most impressive safety features in the entire automotive industry with its full list of standard and available safety and driver assistance features.
The advanced forward collision alert
The new Volvo XC90 benefits from one of the most complete and most advanced forward collision warning systems on the market as standard in every trim level. This system constantly monitors the area in front of the vehicle with the help of radars and a camera in order to warn the driver well before a collision could occur. If despite the loud alert and the visual signal, the driver doesn’t take evasive maneuvers, the system will apply the brakes on its own in order to prevent the collision altogether or at least reduce the force of the impact. This technology is very advanced because it is capable of detecting cars, solid obstacles, pedestrians, and cyclists, even when the driver is trying to turn left at an intersection, where many accidents occur.
The Lane-keeping assist with collision mitigation
Like many premium vehicles, the new Volvo XC90 is equipped with a lane-keeping assist system that sets off a warning when the vehicle is about to exit its lane. Unlike most other vehicles, however, is this system’s capability to detect a risk of collision with an oncoming vehicle or the risk of exiting the shoulder. By monitoring the vehicle’s position within its lane, this system is capable of determining when the wheels are about to exit the edge of the pavement or to cross the median line and applying enough force on the steering wheel to bring the XC90 back in the center of its lane, avoiding a possible collision or loss of control.
The WHIPS technology
Present in every Volvo vehicle sold over the last twenty years, including the XC90, this system remains one of the most effective at preventing whiplash injuries during a rear-end collision. By combining specially designed fixed headrests that are at the correct height for every driver and a collapsible hinge in the backrest, this system ensures that the driver and the front passenger are protected from neck injuries by providing a controlled absorption of the force of a rear impact.
