How the EX90 Lays Volvo’s Safety Groundwork

As we move with a head full of steam into 2023 and beyond, Volvo is once again vying for the top spot in the minds of consumers when it comes to vehicle safety. With the upcoming EX90 EV, Volvo is set to showcase a number of new safety features that are set to be the standard when it comes to vehicle safety. These will start on the EX90, but move there way down the line-up as we move through the 2023 and 2024 model years.

Chief among the innovations on display is the new Luminar LiDAR laser sensor that’s actually embedded within the EX90’s roofline as opposed to the bumpers or upper windshield as tends to be the case. Moving the senso higher up allows the EX90 to see pedestrians up to 820 fee ahead of the vehicle whether you’re travelling at city or highway speeds. It’s also not a camera so it won’t suffer the pitfalls that cameras do, namely the need for more light to be effective.

That’s the outward tool; looking inward, the EX90 features a set of sensors that gauge eye gaze and through that, it can gauge the driver’s concentration at which point it will either nudge you via haptic feedback, then become a little more insistent. If all else fails and the driver is beyond reproach – sleeping, perhaps – any future Volvo with the tech will immediately stop and call for help.

All the while, any Volvo equipped with the tech will be able to upload any data it accrues and use it to “teach” other Volvos how and when drivers are most vulnerable, how often the emergency systems are activated and so on and learn which are the most effective.

The EX90 will be Volvo’s flagship SUV, but rest assured that the tech debuting there will set the groundwork for all Volvo safety going forward. In the future, Volvo will lead the pack in safety.
