Volvo Cars unveiled earlier this year, its pioneering endeavour in the electric vehicle (EV) market with its flagship SUV - the Volvo EX90. Revealed in the heart of downtown Stockholm, this fully electric vehicle embodies the ethos of Scandinavian design, seamlessly blending functionality with aesthetics. Equipped with a brand new, fully electric technology base developed in-house, the Volvo EX90 is the company's robust first step into an all-electric future.
The Volvo EX90, a true seven-seater, boasts a driving range of up to 600 kilometres on a single charge, according to the WLTP test cycle. Charging from 10% to 80% capacity takes only about 30 minutes, making it a reliable ally for a sustainable family lifestyle. The SUV also brings a unique feature of bi-directional charging. This allows the car battery to double up as an energy supply for your home or other electric devices - a functionality Volvo plans to introduce in the future, beginning with selected markets.
Powering the EV is a 111kWh battery coupled with two permanent magnet electric motors, which together produce a staggering 380 kW (517 hp) and 910 Nm of torque in the performance version. Supported by a brand new chassis, the result is a smooth, dynamic driving experience. Furthermore, the EX90 is also the first Volvo vehicle defined by its software, underlining the brand’s commitment to technological innovation.
The sustainability efforts are not confined to the powertrain. The Volvo EX90 comprises 15% recycled steel, 25% recycled aluminium, and about 48 kilogrammes of recycled plastics and bio-based materials. This equates to approximately 15% of the total plastic used in the car, a record-high for any Volvo model to date.
Starting from 2024, the Volvo EX90 will be manufactured in the USA and later also in China. With plans to make these facilities climate-neutral, Volvo demonstrates its commitment to a sustainable global footprint. The release of the EX90 is the start of a plan to unveil one new fully electric car annually, with an ultimate aim of selling only fully electric vehicles by 2030. A lofty ambition, but one that highlights Volvo's dedication to becoming a climate-neutral company by 2040.
“The Volvo EX90 is a statement for where we are, and where we are going,” said Jim Rowan, Volvo's chief executive. The Volvo EX90 undoubtedly signifies the start of an exciting, sustainable new chapter for Volvo Cars.
