A Look at the Volvo Air Purification System

Volvo added a newly available air purification system to its 60 and 90 series models earlier this year. Here is how it can improve your health and your enjoyment out on the road.

Protection against allergens

For many people with seasonal allergies, driving in the spring and summer can be an unpleasant experience due to the large quantity of airborne allergens such as tree and grass pollen that fills the air inside their vehicle. To avoid this problem, the air purification system that can be ordered for most new Volvo models uses filters to remove up to 99.9% of all allergens present in the cabin. This has earned Volvo the Asthma & Allergy Friendly certification from Allergy Standards Limited, an independent program that rewards products that help people living with asthma or severe allergies.

Cleaner air

In addition to removing pollen and other allergens, the Volvo air purification system is also capable of reducing the number of PM 2.5 particles that are blown into the vehicle by the air conditioning system. These particulates are a type of air pollution that can cause health concerns when their concentration is elevated in the ambient air, which is often the case when driving in congested cities or in heavy traffic. Using filters and an ionization process, the air purification system can lower the level of PM 2.5 particles admitted in the vehicle by 95%. These claims can be verified by the driver via a sensor that indicates the pollution level in the air outside and inside the vehicle.

Effective against viruses

The air purification system available in Volvo 60 and 90 series models is also able to protect the vehicle’s occupants from harmful viruses by constantly filtering and purifying the air that enters the cabin, but also the air that is already inside. This means that over the course of a drive, the system is capable of removing up to 97% of the airborne viruses that enter the climate control system from the outside and up to 95% of the viruses that were introduced into the cabin by entering passengers or via a lowered window.
