2022 Volvo XC40 vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA: More Advanced and Versatile

2022 Volvo XC40 vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA: More Advanced and Versatile

The subcompact 2021 XC40 SUV features a Scandinavian styling approach with an urban focus. It may look compact, but it comfortably seats five passengers and offers three exciting powertrains that range from gas to all electric. To help illustrate its standing in the segment, we compare it to the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA.

The 2022 Volvo XC40 has the most powerful and all-electric powertrains

The XC40 offers several powertrains that provide a highly desirable range of options. The T4 engine, and available in the Momentum, features 187 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. This model and engine combination have the lowest MSRP (under $40,000) of any other XC40 or GLA model offered.

Buyers can also upgrade to the T5 engine that outputs 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The T4 is available in the Momentum, and the T5 is available in all other gas trims. The XC40 Recharge EV boasts a spectacular 400 horsepower and 486 lb-ft of torque and a 320 km range.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 includes a turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder that outputs 221 hp. This is the only non-AMG model available. T5- and Recharge-equipped XC40 models feature more horsepower than the GLA 250. The AMG GLA 35 and AMG GLA 45 deliver above 300 horsepower, but neither compete with the blazing torque and horsepower of the XC40 Recharge.

The 2022 Volvo XC40 extends versatility and comfort

A premium subcompact SUV must also deliver on passenger volume and versatility. The XC40 does a fantastic job at opening up the interior and beating the GLA in several metric. In the front row, the XC40 has up to 1,031 mm of headroom and 1,440 mm of shoulder room, which all exceed the GLA's comparative measurements.

The XC40 also has more rear headroom, shoulder room and legroom than the GLA. That is important if you want your family and friends to have optimum room and comfort.

The XC40 has nearly 1,337 litres of cargo volume behind the front seats. And its interior hosts Scandinavian-style finishings that you will never find in the GLA or any other German-made SUV.

The Volvo XC40 is also equipped with the Sensus infotainment system that provides the best features at the tip of your fingers, outranking the GLA’s system in terms of speed and advancement.
